One paragraph per tree, folklore and botany both. Say which is which.

Oak -- Sacred in nearly every European tradition; Pliny's account of druids and mistletoe on oak is the origin of the whole idea. Botany: Quercus robur lives 500+ years; acorns every 2-3 years in "mast" years.

Yew -- Churchyard tree, older than the churches in many cases (Fortingall, Scotland, possibly 2,000+ years). Every part poisonous except the aril. Associated with death and endurance.

Hazel -- Nuts of wisdom in Irish myth (the salmon of Fionn). Botany: coppices readily; the reason it appears everywhere in hedges.

Rowan -- Protective; planted by doors in Scotland and Scandinavia. Berries red, edible cooked.

Birch -- First letter of the ogham, first tree to colonise cleared ground. Bark peels; sap tapped in spring.
